Medicalodges Butler emerged as Bates County’s largest nursing home in the first quarter of 2026, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reported.
The facility was equipped with 105 beds, which is 25 more than the county average during the first quarter of 2026. The center supported an average of 62 residents throughout that timeframe.
CMS awarded Medicalodges Butler an overall rating of 4 out of 5, surpassing the Missouri nursing home average rating of 2.5.
For the quarter, Butler Rehab and Healthcare Center ranked as Bates County’s second largest bed provider with 98 slots, followed by Baptist Homes of Adrian, which offered 38 beds.

U.S. Census Bureau estimates show the nation’s aging population continues to grow as the number of children decreases. From 2020 to 2024, those ages 65 and older increased by 13%, while the under-18 group decreased by 1.7%. Over the last century, the older adult population has expanded rapidly, rising from 4.9 million in 1920 to over 61 million in 2024.
A 2021 study finds nearly half of people in this age bracket—about 28 million—may need long-term services and support, with projections indicating that more than one-third could ultimately require nursing home care.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an insurance education group. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
