Martha Sims, a long-time volunteer and Foundation Board member at Cass Regional Medical Center, was recognized on Mar. 12 as one of Ingram’s magazine’s “2026 Heroes of Healthcare.”

Sims has been involved with Cass Regional for nearly two decades, where she played a key role in developing and maintaining the hospital’s campus gardens. These gardens, which cover two acres and include courtyards, memorial spaces, and walking trails across the 40-acre campus, are intended to provide comfort and healing for patients, visitors, and staff.

Originally from Cape Girardeau with a background in retail and sales marketing, Sims began her service at Cass Regional after retiring from her husband’s dealership office. She joined the Foundation Board and capital campaign advisory group in 2008. Reflecting on her experience, Sims said, “I needed them maybe more than they needed me.”

During her 18 years at Cass Regional, Sims led efforts to transform the hospital grounds into therapeutic spaces. She also helped organize the annual Plant Sale fundraiser that has raised over $15,000 for garden maintenance in the past four years. Although she has stepped back from daily operations as ‘Garden Captain,’ Sims continues to serve as Director Emerita on the Foundation Board.

At a recent event honoring her transition from active gardening duties, board members highlighted her lasting impact. “The peace and beauty found throughout the gardens today are a direct reflection of Martha’s vision and unwavering commitment,” read her official nomination. “Her influence, and the comfort these spaces provide, will be felt for years to come.”

Cass Regional Medical Center is a critical access hospital offering emergency care; general and specialty surgery; rehabilitation services including cardiac rehabilitation and diabetes education; advanced diagnostic imaging; and behavioral health services. The Cass Regional Medical Center Foundation supports projects such as medical equipment funding, construction of facilities like the Emergency Department and Healing Garden, scholarship programs, assistance funds for patients and employees, as well as ongoing maintenance of campus gardens.
