Butler Rehab and Healthcare Center was the second largest nursing home in Bates County for the first quarter of 2026, data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) shows.

The facility offered 98 beds, which was 18 more than the county average during the same timeframe. An average of 55.5 residents were served each day.

The CMS granted Butler Rehab and Healthcare Center an overall rating of 1 out of 5, trailing the Missouri nursing home average of 2.5 on the agency’s rating scale.

Medicalodges Butler operated as the largest nursing home in the county with 105 available beds, while Baptist Homes of Adrian placed third with 38.

U.S. Census Bureau figures indicate America’s older adult population keeps rising, even as numbers of younger people fall. Between 2020 and 2024, the population of Americans ages 65 and older climbed by 13%, while those younger than 18 declined 1.7%. Over the last century, the older segment of the U.S. population experienced substantial growth, expanding from 4.9 million in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.

A 2021 analysis estimates that about half—28 million—of the older adult population may need long-term care and support, with over one-third potentially requiring nursing home services.

“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
